| REGISTRATION FAQs |
It
is important that you register with a local GP (General Practitioner)
when you come to study at the University of Warwick. If you are
a first year student you can complete your registration form
alongside all the other enrolment procedures which you do in
your first week. You should register with a General Practitioner
(GP) as soon as you know your address at University. You can
register with one of the two medical practices based at the Health
Centre on the main campus if you are resident on campus or in
our catchment area (approximately south & west Coventry) - see our catchment area map |
|
|
After
registering with a GP, we strongly advise that any student who
has a significant medical condition (e.g. diabetes, asthma,
epilepsy etc) or is over 30 years old or is on any regular medication
or oral contraceptives should come to the Health Centre
for a health check as early as possible.
Students from overseas
who have not had a Meningitis C vaccination before arrival in this
country should also come for a health check. We also recommend
that all students should have had MMR vaccination. (Mumps,
Measles and Rubella) |
| IT
IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU REGISTER WITH A DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
AND NOT WAIT UNTIL YOU ARE ILL OR NEED MEDICAL
ADVICE AS IT MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE PROMPTLY. |
| Returning Students |
| You will have changed address
since last year and you must tell us as soon as possible. If
you were registered with us then you must tell us your new address
otherwise the Health Authority may take you off our list. If you
have moved to Leamington Spa you need to register with a GP practice
there as soon as possible. You cannot remain registered with either
of the two GP practices here. If you are moving back onto campus
or within our catchment area you may need to re-register with one
of the practices - check as soon as possible. |
| If you are not registered with a doctor
where you live, you may have difficulties when ill, especially overnight
or at the weekend. Most university students spend more time in and
around the University than back at the family home. You are likely
to be living away from the support of your family, and hence it is
important that you register with a GP here. If you go back home during
the vacation and you are ill, you can still see a local GP as a temporary
resident in the area - and if the practice is the one you were with
before University they will probably retain some of your basic medical
history in the surgery. |
| To register with a Doctor at the Health
Centre you must be |
|
a student (undergraduate or postgraduate)
on a recognised course at the University of Warwick AND resident
in our catchment areas for at least 3 months from the date of registration
OR |
|
a member of staff of the University
AND resident on campus for at least 6 months from the
date of registration OR |
|
the spouse or child of a student or eligible member of staff resident with their parent/partner for at least 6 months |
| A registration form must be completed
for spouses and children. |
| You can only be registered with the
Health Centre if you are resident on campus OR in our catchment
area. If you live, or move out of our catchment areas you should
register with another GP in that area..... |
 |
You
can check the NHS website where you can search for Doctors, Dentists, Opticians and Pharmacies and other NHS services by area |
|
|
| If you change your address (even if it
is still on campus) it is important that you let us know. You
can do this online. |
CHANGE
OF ADDRESS |
| If
in the course of your time at the University you move outside the catchment
area for this health centre it is important that you register
with a new GP for the area you are resident in. (e.g. Leamington
Spa or northeast Coventry) This is particularly vital if you need
to see a doctor out of hours. As Coventry Primary Care Trust carry
out regular checks you may be removed automatically and not
realise that you are no longer registered with us. If you move
back into our area or onto campus please come down to the health
centre and we will quickly register you and request your notes
through Coventry (Teaching) Primary Care Trust. It is also important to notify
the health centre if you change address either on campus or within
the catchment area. |

If
you come from overseas you can register with a doctor here and
receive NHS care if you are going to be resident and studying
at this University for 3 months or more. There are reciprocal
agreements with certain countries so that you are eligible for
NHS care if a medical condition arises whilst in this country
and you will be resident for less than 3 months. For full details
please contact the Health Centre as there are very detailed regulations
which we are bound by.
If
you are coming from overseas and there is any doubt that you
will be eligible for NHS care please check beforehand and/or
get the appropriate medical insurance cover. |
OTHERS: |
The
spouse and immediate family of a student, who is registered with
one of the practices here, can also register with the same GP
practice. If you are a member of staff of this University
you can register with either of the practices at this health
centre if you are resident on campus.
Your
notes are held at this Health Centre and , except in emergencies,
you can only see your doctor at this health centre.
An ex-student or ex-member of staff or members of their family cannot continue to be registered with a practice at this health centre even if they remain at the same address. They may be able to transfer to the main surgery for either practice if they live within their catchment area and satisfy the registration criteria for the main surgery. |
| TEMPORARY
RESIDENTS: |
| All
GPs can see a person who is resident away from home for a short
period. There are many visitors to conferences at the University
of Warwick or who visit a student and stay overnight. If you are
ill and cannot wait until you return home then visit or phone (Ext
24888) the Health Centre and the reception staff will organise
an appointment as early as possible. You will be seen more quickly
if you can come down to the health centre, if possible, for an
appointment with the doctor rather than requesting a home visit.
For services when the Health Centre is closed see "Out-of
hours"
or "Emergency services" . We cannot see you
if you are registered with a GP in Coventry or the immediate vicinity
unless it is an emergency. |
