YOU MAY
NOT NEED TO SEE A DOCTOR EVERY TIME |
DID
YOU KNOW THAT OUR NURSES CAN DIAGNOSE AND TREAT PATIENTS? |
| The Doctors
and Nurses at this Health Centre work together as a team to ensure
that patients are provided with the appropriate service at the time
of need. The daily MINOR ILLNESS sessions have been developed so that patients requesting an appointment on the day can have their medical problem assessed and treated promptly by the NURSE PRACTITIONER, Ocassionally after assessing the patient's needs the Nurse Practitioner may arrange for the Doctor to examine the patient, but this is not normally required.. This process will enable patients whose need
is the most urgent to be seen quickly and effectively. |
| Patients
requesting an appointment on the same day will initially be seen by a Nurse Practitioner unless you have recently been seen or treated by one of our GPs about this condition. Nurse Practitioners assess and review the following conditions:- |

The
following will be seen urgently by the Doctor rather than the Nurse Practitioner:

| PRACTICE
NURSING SERVICES |
| We have
4 nurses and during term time appointments can be made between
9.00am and 5.30pm. Every effort will be made to keep waiting
time to a minimum; however emergencies do occur and a rigid time
system cannot always be adhered to. All nurses can give advice
on travel, immunisations, dressings, cervical smears, sexual health
and contraception, minor ailments and child immunisation. We recommend
a brief check-up soon after you register as your records will take
a long time to reach us or may not be available in this country.
We need your vaccination details and dates. The check up will take
place during the first week of the Autumn term or as soon as you
can attend the health centre. We ask for your home address as well
as your university address so that, in the unlikely event that we
need to, we can contact you during vacation. |
| Self
Treatment of common illnesses |
|
Most minor illnesses can be managed at home. In some of these cases
there is nothing a doctor can do that a patient can't do just as
well. There is a free booklet available at the Health Centre
which offers general advice and guidance and this could be helpful
if you are living away from home for the first time. It is called
"The NHS Home Healthcare Guide".(also
see this on the NHS Direct website )
(PLEASE NOTE that there are many health-related websites on the
internet - some more reliable than others. Trust only reputable
sites (often part of the NHS) OR see a doctor if you are worried.) |
| OR call NHS Direct
on 08 45 46 47 or visit their website |
 |
| However
if you are worried about your condition do not hesitate to contact
a doctor. |
