HOW TO CONTACT A DOCTOR IN AN EMERGENCY:
If someone needs medical care in an emergency e.g. if they have collapsed or are unconscious or if there has been a serious accident involving suspected damage to head, back or neck; major accident in the workplace or a possible serious broken bone then get them to hospital by dialing "999" and summoning an ambulance. Do not hesitate!
Then seek the help of a local first aider to give immediate care to ensure that the individual keeps breathing and their heart & blood circulation is still functioning. The first aider will also ensure that appropriate immediate care is given to the casualty.
If you dial 999 for the ambulance through the University switchboard when on campus you will get through to the University Emergency operator, who will ask you for essential information and contact the ambulance for you.
The security officer will be informed and will help guide the ambulance from the gatehouse to where it is needed.

If the accident is more minor but there is a suspected broken bone take the patient to the nearest Accident and Emergency department at a Hospital. The nearest for the University of Warwick is the A&E department at University Hospital (previously known as Walsgrave Hospital) in Coventry (See MAP). There is also an Accident & Emergency department at Warwick Hospital.(See MAP)

To get to University Hospital (previously known as Walsgrave Hospital) in Coventry by public transport take the Bus 801 from the University campus or Bus 27 from Coventry Railway Station.

Normally if you are registered with another GP in Coventry you cannot be treated by one of doctors based at this health centre. However if you are ill and it is CLINICALLY URGENT that you see a doctor quickly then any GP can see any person; in those circumstances come down to the Health Centre. then the doctors can see you if you are ill and cannot wait until you return home.
HOW TO CONTACT A DOCTOR OUTSIDE OF SURGERY HOURS

If you need to see a doctor urgently contact the Health Centre (by telephone Ext. 24888 or come to the centre) if we are open (9am -5pm, Mon - Fri). If you phone and the Health Centre is closed you will be given the telephone numbers below.

  • for the Dr Cowan practice (Pink) Tel; (024) 7667 4123
  • for the Dr Parker practice (Blue) Tel: (024) 7622 8606
  • or contact the University switchboard - who will also know the above numbers and the number for the Out of Hours Service.

As there are two GP practices at the health centre, it is important to know which Practice you are registered with when you make the call. These numbers are also displayed outside the health centre.
If you are ill whilst away from home and your normal GP and you are temporarily resident on the University campus (e.g. when attending a conference) contact the University switchboard and the Security officer will know which practice to be contacted and how to contact the Out of Hours service.if the surgeries are closed.
When phoning out of hours for either practice and if the sick person is resident on site then the Residence Tutor and / or the Security Officer on duty can help you. There is always a security officer, who is first-aid trained, on duty at night.
If the main surgery for your practice is closed:-
With effect from 6.30pm Monday 19th April 2004 the Out-of-Hours Primary Medical Care Service, which covers emergency general medical care when this Health Centre & most GP practices in Coventry are closed, will be provided by COVENTRY PRIMARY CARE TRUST.
